Slightly deeper in color than the 2006, the 2003 Meursault Villages has a simple but attractive bouquet of honeydew melon, beeswax and wild heather honey, later developing a popcorn scent with aeration. The palate has Meursault leitmotifs of walnut and hazelnut on the entry, but then the second half is quite orthodox and a slightly bitter, sour lemon finish. Possibly running out of puff?

(Vireuils-Dessuos; the village bottling shipped to the U.S.) Aromatic nose combines orange oil, grilled almond and spices; totally different from the 2004s that preceded this wine. Rich, spicy and layered in the mouth, with an exotic orange flavor. Builds nicely toward the back and finishes firm and fresh.

Exhibiting a nose of spiced minerals, the 2003 Meursault (Chaumes) (white) – a parcel located above Perrieres that is rented by the commune to Coche’s son Raphael – displays a light to medium-bodied, silky-textured character. Its lovely buttery flavors are intermingled with apples and pears. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. Importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel. (510) 524-1524
