(60% garnacha and 40% carinena, from vines that reportedly range from 80 to 100 years of age; raised for 18 months in French oak, one-third of it new): Saturated ruby. Heady scents of black raspberry, cherry-cola, star anise and rose oil. Deeply pitched, intense red and dark berry and cherry flavors are joined by sexy floral pastille and spicecake nuances that build with aeration. Supple tannins add shape to the very long, spicy finish, which leaves notes of dark berries, minerals and cola behind.

The four barrels of 2010 Nit de Nin come from 80- to 100-year-old Garnacha and Carinena vines from Mas d’En Cacador in Porrera. It has a lively, exotic bouquet of orange sorbet, kirsch and a touch of liquorice that is immediately captivating. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, layers of ripe, lascivious red fruit leading to a sumptuous, mineral-rich finish with a subtle hint of oxtail on the aftertaste. While not a cheap Priorat red, it is certainly an intellectual wine that should offer a fascinating evolution. Drink 2014-2025+ Importer: Eric Solomon, European Cellars, Charlotte, NC; tel.
