Score 91-94/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2004

Dark ruby-red color. Superripe, liqueur-like aromas of black cherry and minerals; as in most recent vintages, more exotic than the Brulees at this early stage. Denser, lusher and more obviously sweet in the mid-palate, but with excellent cut. Then distinctly tougher and more austere on the back end, finishing a bit muscular and clenched. Both this and the Brulees really beg for six or seven years of cellaring.

There is a completely different character here as this is austere, backward and understated, indeed almost severe at the moment and as is usually the case, with much more prominent acidity. In particular, this seems a good deal more massive in 2002 than usual with its trademark power but despite the size and weight, there's no absence of elegance or finesse. Structured yet beautifully balanced with wonderfully depth, this is a very closed wine for the vintage, indeed as backward as the Richebourg. The minerality is almost pungent, especially so on the stunningly long backend. In short, this is very promising as the raw material is superb but it will clearly require plenty of patience.
