This isn't quite as ripe as the Rouget yet this is really lovely with an understated purity and detail that I find utterly beguiling. Like many '96s today, this is not an especially dense or powerful wine though there is good if not truly exceptionally mid-palate sap, fine intensity and incipient complexity all framed and highlighted by prominent finishing acidity. This should enjoy a long life as there is excellent balance and the essential character here is one of finesse rather than power. Multiple, and consistent, notes. Allen Meadows, Burghound Oct01,2006

This wine has a bright, dark ruby color, an enticing cherry and toasty oak-scented nose, as well as a hard, dryish, high acid, yet paradoxically rich and broad personality. It was disjointed, with well-ripened and spicy fruit in conflict with its crisp acidity. Its aromas would suggest a 90+ point score, its fruit an excellent to outstanding rating, and its balance a distressingly low score. Will it harmonize or remain awkward? More reticent but bright nose currently dominated by spicy oak. Sweet and juicy in the mouth, but very closed. Seems atypically difficult to taste. "Yes, it's a very tight wine in '96," says Meo, "but it's showing better now than before the racking." Tough but very long; built rather like a Richebourg.
