From Padthaway, the 2004 Shiraz Sophie’s Garden exhibits copious amounts of blackberry, chocolate, and espresso notes, serious concentration, unbelievable power and richness, and also great purity and elegance, in spite of some lofty alcohol (16%). This distinctive, heady Shiraz should age beautifully for 12-15 years. Importer: Paterno Imports, Lake Bluff, IL; tel. (847) 604-8900

Dark red. Strong blackberry and kirsch aromas accented by flowers, minerals and cinnamon. Quite vibrant on the palate, with a concentrated cherry flavor that's tangy and refreshing. Finishes with fine-grained tannins. This gained in freshness and precision with air and should be left in the cellar for at least three more years. I really like this wine's freshness and cut.
