Tasting notes
Score 96/100 · Drink 2012-2025, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Aug 2012

The 1964 Unico contains 35% of Bordeaux varieties. It continues to offer an opulent bouquet with notes of decayed wild strawberry, mandarin, lemon thyme and a faint touch of camphor. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded, fleshy tannins. It has wonderful balance and seems to be at its peak. There are notes of leather, allspice, molasses and fresh fig, whilst the tannins are mellow but continue to offer a sturdy chassis. There are vibrant citrus fruits on the finish that ensure the -64 remains exuberant and vivacious. However, it does not have the ambition and dimension of the imperious 1962, whilst the finish is comparatively grainier and not as crystalline. But overall, this remains a seductive Unico of immense breeding and passion. 96,000 bottles produced. Drink now-2025.

Great vintage alongside 1970. The opulent vintage – famous! Seems often younger than 1970. Dark vibrant ruby. Heady, meaty nose. Very rich and lively. Broad and nervy. Great combination! Such vigour! And very much high-plateau wine. Very pure individual expression of the best of Ribera del Duero. Long. (JR)
