2012 Chablis Valmur

This wine was tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur is a knockout wine that under tough blind conditions trumped its peers and surpassed my own expectations. It has a delightful and engaging bouquet with honeysuckle and flint aromas, is beautifully defined, focused, very poised and sophisticated. The palate is fresh and engaging, rounded and quite rich, and flattering at this early stage with peach and citrus lemon fanning out on the finish; there are residues of honey on the long aftertaste. I believe the expression is “killer juice.”

Moreau's 2012 Chablis Valmur is all class. Silky and refined throughout, the Valmur is beautifully balanced. The feminine style stands in stark contrast to the decidedly more powerful and virile Vaudésir. This is an exceptionally nuanced and polished Valmur with tons of sheer appeal.

Bright yellow. Lovely restrained aromas of peach, soft citrus fruits and flowers; showing less oak influence than the Blanchots. Sweet peach and spice flavors are given structural support by solid lively acidity. The tactile, building, well-delineated finish suggests that this rather powerful wine will evolve gracefully in bottle. This will certainly merit an even higher rating if it develops more nuance with aging.
