Score 92/100 · Drink 2021-2032, Neal Martin, Aug 2021

The 1999 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru has (for this domaine) a rich and almost decadent bouquet with layers of lightly honeyed fruit and flashes of linseed and sesame, the growing season dictating the aromatics over the terroir. The palate is well balanced, powerful and a contender for one of the most hedonistic Raveneau wines that I have encountered. Does that make it better? That depends on what you seek in a Chablis, though for me it maybe just misses a bit of the tension that I love about Raveneau's wines.

I found this fascinating as Valmur is my favorite of the Chablis grands crus and is normally the most austere and understated of them all, yet this was positively friendly with its round, almost easy fruit and flavors and while there is certainly breed and class here, it lacks the same driving persistence and pungency of the Blanchot. To be sure, there is plenty of wine here and there is a hint of finishing austerity but this is not at the same level as the Blanchot. Allen Meadows, Burghound, Oct01,2002.
