Score 90/100 · Drink 2016-2024, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2016

The 2012 Clos Badon is bold, dark and enticing, with striking aromatics to match the intense, voluptuous fruit. Black cherry, plum, crème de cassis and sweet spices are laced together in an open-knit, supple Saint Emilion with tons of near-term appeal. One of the hidden gems of the vintage, the Clos Badon should drink well for at least another handful of years. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

From the stable of Jean-Luc Thunevin, Clos Badon’s 2012 has an inky ruby/purple color, sweet cassis, black raspberry fruit, not a lot of complexity, but a luscious, nearly luxurious style, with a medium-bodied mouthfeel, admirable purity and impressive length. A little more complexity would have elevated the score, but this is quite satisfying, as well as an impressive St.-Emilion. Anticipated maturity: now-2025.
