The 2008 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes is drinking well, unfurling in the glass with notes of crisp yellow orchard fruit, beeswax, mandarin oil and fresh pastry. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, elegantly textural and racy. The Carillons' vines in Combettes were 17 years old in 2008, and this bottling doesn't display the concentration of the Perrières or Réferts, but it's a lovely wine nonetheless.

Ripe aromas of oyster shell, smoke and hazelnut, plus a whiff of honey. Round, supple and fat; less minerally than the Champs Canet and more flatteur today. Finishes with strong fruit but a faint dryness.
More muted nose than the village wine but real sweetness and not a trace of the tartness in others’ wines. In a year or two this should be looking lovely. Really vibrant. (JR)
(the Champs Canet and Perrieres were in the middle of their malolactic fermentations, but this Combettes finished in March) Aromatic, expressive nose offers peach and flowers. Sweet, fat and pliant; a distinctly easier style than the 2007, but has more material too. The floral character carries through to the finish.
