Red-ruby. Black cherry, licorice and spicy oak on the nose. Sweet, dense, broad and round; this is almost shockingly supple considering the site and the year. Tangy mineral and licorice flavors linger through the long finish, dusting the entire palate. Can the 2002 be better than this?

Waxy black cherries can be discerned in the rich aromatics of the 2001 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Combottes. This medium-bodied wine broadens on the attack to display loads of red and black berries. Its extensive finish is tight, however, and reveals a hint of astringency in its copious tannin. This offering’s ultimate quality will be determined on how Lignier deals with this characteristic during its last few months of elevage. It should be consumed over the next 6 years. Good bright, deep red. Cherry, mulberry, smoke and flowers on the nose, along with some spicy oak. Sweet and dense but firm, with lovely vinosity giving the pure fruit a penetrating quality. Structured, complex, sappy wine with noteworthy complexity and subtle persistence. The Ligniers' vines here are adjacent to the best part of Clos de la Roche, notes Romain.
