Tasting notes
The brilliant 2000 Magari (6,000 cases) is a blend of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Its opaque purple color is followed by a gorgeous perfume of espresso, new saddle leather, blackberries, creme de cassis, smoke, and licorice. The wine is full-bodied and opulently-textured, with fabulous fruit concentration, great purity, and a savory, long mouthfeel. The tannin, acidity, and wood are brilliantly integrated in this exceptional effort. Anticipated maturity: now-2013. Kudos to Angelo Gaja, who has taken up the challenge of producing great wines far from his home base in Barbaresco. This debut release is immensely promising.
