Mid warm ruby. Wild herbs, delicate sour red cherry aroma. Zesty, full of life. Fresh and smooth. Tannins are quite dense but smooth. Less peppery than the 2008, though the pepper is still there. A little more subdued though the finish is very fresh and long. (JH)

The 2007 QDM Souson is made from 100% Souson, a virtually extinct variety that was popular in Galicia in the late 1800’s before phylloxera hit. The resurrected vineyard is 9 years old and a total of 2 barrels were produced. Alcoholic fermentation with native yeasts, malolactic fermentation with lees contact, and 14 months in French oak were followed by 6 months in stainless steel to stabilize the wine naturally. The result is a wine with a silky texture reminiscent of a high quality red Burgundy, an enchanting perfume of mineral, exotic spices, incense, lavender, black cherry, and black raspberry, and a vibrant acid structure which will ensure longevity. This singular offering provides abundant sensual and intellectual food for thought. Quinta da Muradella, located in the town of Verin in the Monterrei DO, is a garage winery where proprietor Jose Luis Mateo and Raul Perez make wine from 34 unique, certified organic, parcels. A principal purpose of the project is to relate the history of the region through the wines. That fascinating story goes beyond the bounds of this report but the importer can provide more detailed information to those interested. Importer: Ole Imports, New Rochelle, NY; www.oleimports.com

(this local variety is virtually extinct) Vivid ruby. Exotic, smoky aromas of dark cherry, licorice, violet and dark chocolate. Rich and lively, with focused cherry and blackberry flavors and hints of smoky herbs and tarragon. Becomes more vibrant with air, finishing on a nervy mineral note, with excellent length.
