Score 92/100 · Drink 2017-2018, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct 2017

The 1996 Barolo Cannubi is now fully mature, or very close to it. There is good depth in the glass, with hints of dark cherry, plum, underbrush and lavender that add complexity. Any remaining bottles need to be finished. This is the best of the three bottles I tasted. The other two were more advanced.

Dark ruby. The outrageous and utterly beautiful 1996 offers an alluring balsamic nose followed by generous amounts of rich dark cherry fruit intermingled with more evolved notes of tar, chocolate and menthol that emerge as the wine sits in the glass. It is massive and packed on the palate, showing layers of flavors and much personality. At the early part of what promises to be a long drinking window.
