Score 93/100 · Jay S Miller, Wine Advocate, Dec 2007

The 2002 Cheval des Andes is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Malbec. It is stylistically very similar to the 2004 but more advanced in its development. This vintage is not currently available. Cheval des Andes is owned by legendary St.-Emilion producer, Chateau Cheval Blanc. The wine is sourced from their 50 hectare estate vineyard planted on its own roots in 1929. The first vintage was 1999 and the 2004 was the first in which there was more Malbec than Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. New oak is utilized for the Cabernet and 1 year old barrels for the Malbec. 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Malbec, 4% Petit Verdot . Deliciously complex – sweet, ripe and sophisticated. Elegant in all its richness.

(56% cabernet, 40% malbec and 4% petit verdot) Full ruby-red. Slightly raw, medicinal aromas of cassis, licorice and shoe polish, with a strong oakiness. Tightly wound, brooding and very young; an impression of higher acidity accentuates the wine's dryness. In a traditional claret style, youthfully tough and medicinal and in need of a decade of aging. The tannins coat the mouth, and there are lingering notes of chocolate and mint. But does it have the underlying sweetness of primary material to come through in the end? I tasted this wine on three different occasions and had the same reservations. Give this a long decanting if you plan to open it anytime soon. Also tasted: 2004 Merlot Mendoza.
