Prior to being carafed: Healthy medium red. Lovely perfume of red berries, truffle, mocha and underbrush. Shows a bit of truffley, smoky evolution in the mouth, but the wine's strong acidity comes across as a bit tart. But this wine has plenty of flavor intensity and freshness and appears to be evolving very slowly. Finishes with late-arriving tannins and brisk acidity. The same bottle tasted after decanting: A captivating note of rose petal on the nose. Sweet and supple on the palate, showing a repeating floral quality. Suaver and more harmonious on the end, with the tannins coming across as rather fine-grained but still a touch dry-edged. This long wine has clearly been softened by the decanting, although it still seems to be holding something back in terms of texture and sweetness. "The 2001s were spikier early on than the more flattering 2002s owing to their higher acidity," said Marie-Christine Mugneret, adding that 2001 resembles 2006 while 2002 is like 2007.

The bright, spicy, gorgeously sweet 2001 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Chaignots is light to medium-bodied and dominated by spicy red fruits. Its should be drunk over the next 5 years. Importer: A Peter Vezan Selection, Paris fax #011-33-1-42-55-42-93
Good full red. Cool aromas of black raspberry, menthol and underbrush. Pure and fresh but also sweet, broad and full for the vintage; plumper than the Vosne villages but without any loss of shape. Harmonious acidity and ripe tannins nicely frame the wine's strong fruit.
Good red-ruby. Precise, floral aromas of black plum, minerals and menthol. Minerally, floral and fresh, with good fullness of texture. At once chewy and smooth. Finishes long and aromatic, with fine tannins and subtle persistence. Rather Vosne-like in style. A very good early showing for this wine.
