Score 94/100 · Drink 2022-2034, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Oct 2022

Guaranteed to make people happy around a festive table, Alter Ego de Palmer is easily in the top three most consistent 2nd wines of Bordeaux (redefining the term along the way), and it is singing right now in the 2006 vintage. Often overshadowed by the 2005, this has depth and concentration at 16 years old, and majors on black chocolate, espresso and liqourice root, with the waves of peony and iris that are so signature to both the 1st and 2nd wine at Palmer. 50% new oak, Thomas Duroux director.

Magnum. Notably smooth and very Margaux. Very flattering and sumptuous to drink now. Sweet start and perhaps just starting to dry out but still lovely. (JR)

Tasted blind at Farr Vintners' horizontal tasting, the 2006 Alter Ego de Palmer has evolved a savoury bouquet with earthy, almost Saint Estèphe like aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red cherry fruit, quite spicy yet harmonious with a ferrous, structured, tobacco-stained finish that lingers long in the mouth. After ten years, this seems to be à point, though it has the substance to give another 5-8 years of pleasure. Tasted April 2016.
