I had the luck of tasting one of only two bottles that remained in the Barbeito cellars of the 1957 Boal, a historic wine for Ricardo Freitas because it was the first "frasqueira" wine that he bottled. It feels a little reductive, closed with hints of mushrooms, iodine, a metallic touch, with hints of blood and iron. The wine is marked with sediment and shows strong concentration. It has a polished palate and integrated sugar. It was bottled in the mid of the 1990s.

Bottled 1992. 1,200 bottles. Pale greenish tawny. Sweet and smudgy nose. Lots of delicacy and rose petals and then smoked meat and acidity. There’s certainly a lot here! Undertow of richness. A subtle wine, although there’s a little bit of astringency on the finish. (JR)
