The 1993 Trotanoy, poured from magnum, has a simple but effective nose with blackberry, raspberry and shavings of black truffles. There is a very slight ash-like scent with aeration. There's fine delineation, and it's fresh. The palate is medium-bodied with a mixture of red and black fruit laced with freshly-rolled tobacco, though you cannot avoid the fact that this Pomerol is a bit obdurate and austere on the finish. Drink over the next decade. Tasted at the Académie du Vin dinner in Bordeaux.

As a longtime fan of this property, I have been candid about my disappointment with most vintages of Trotanoy between 1983 and 1989. Certainly the 1990 appeared to be a return to the big, burly, concentrated style of Trotanoy produced in the forties, fifties, sixties, and early seventies. I am now convinced this property is on the rebound, as a result of sensational efforts in 1993, 1994, and the 1995, the latter wine the greatest Trotanoy since the 1970 and 1982. This is a wine to check out in the generally ignored 1993 vintage. Trotanoy's offering exhibits a saturated purple color, as well as a sweet, ripe nose of black-cherries, licorice, and earth. Top-class flavors, an opulent texture, medium to full body, moderate tannin, and an inner-core of sweet, jammy, concentrated fruit make this a terrific effort for the 1993 vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2018. A sleeper!

About the producer
Château Trotanoy was one of the first recognised Premier Cru sites on the Pomerol plateau, with records dating back to the late 1700s. Even back in the nineteenth century it was seen as the best site in Pomerol second only to Vieux Château Certan.
