A sleeper of the vintage, Ducru’s second wine, the 2003 Croix du Beaucaillou is a complex, fully mature effort displaying notes of cedarwood, incense, spice and red and black currants. With medium body as well as a spicy, round finish, it can be enjoyed over the next 5-6 years.

Lively ruby. Some freshness. Dry and sleek on the finish. A little sweet and dry, especially on the finish, but not bad. (Average group score: 14.4) (JR)

Much richer nose than its stablemate Lalande Borie, with a weak rim. Quite structured and fresh, this blend with 78 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon. The palate is not as exotic as the nose suggests, however – in fact it is definitely tough and inky. Awkward. This, like many 2003s, was deliberately fermented at temperatures around 24 degrees, lower than usual. (JR)
