The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie continues to mature at a glacial pace. Hauntingly dark, it opens with an array of dusty rose, clove, allspice and cedar shavings complementing dried strawberries. Its energy and verve capture the senses as cooling acidity adds lift to its tart wild berry fruit, further accentuated by a tinge of sour citrus. Despite its lingering tannic heft, the 2006 leaves the palate salivating, a beautiful contrast to a saturation of primary concentration and a flourish of exotic spice that lingers.

Darkly alluring, the 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie reminds me of a country candle and spice shop, with an array of cloves, allspice, cinnamon and dried flowers complicating musky red currants. Its acidity stands out upon the first sip, cooling, lifting and energizing, with a burst of tart wild berries that come to the fore, while sour citrus adds contrast. The 2006 leaves the mouth watering for more, despite its lingering tannic heft, as a saturation of primary fruits remains and a balsamic flourish slowly fades. This is still an adolescent, all elbows and knees, yet positioned for greatness.

Good bright, dark red. Raspberry, marzipan and underbrush on the nose. Silky and energetic, with a light medicinal reserve to its complex flavors of redcurrant, mint, herbs and spices. A nicely dense, serious midweight with very good definition and a spine for aging.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna delle Grazie is a big, broad-shouldered wine endowed with impressive concentration in its dark red fruit. Floral notes are woven throughout, adding lift and elegance. The oak tannins come through a touch prominently on the finish, adding an element of dryness that is distracting. Otherwise, this is a first-rate effort with a brilliant future. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Each year I am increasingly impressed with the wines I taste from Il Marroneto.
