Even better is the extraordinary 2003 La Plus de la Fleur de Bouard, 100% Merlot that spent 30 months in barrel. Its dense blue/purple color reveals no lightening at the rim, and the terrific bouquet offers aromas of spring flowers, blueberry liqueur, vanillin and graphite. Full-bodied, opulent, voluptuous, youthful and vigorous, this sensational effort, one of the stars of the vintage, is an incredible over-achiever, especially for a Right Bank 2003. Enjoy it over the next 5-10 years. The fact that proprietor Hubert de Bouard was able to achieve these two brilliant efforts from a satellite appellation of Pomerol is remarkable.

Moderately saturated red-ruby. Expressive nose offers black raspberry, smoked meat, chocolate, tobacco and smoke, along with some nutty oak; a bit Napa-like. Then tighter-grained and more vibrant in the middle than the Fleur de Bouard, with apparent minerality giving energy to the middle palate. Finishes with substantial oak tannins but good freshness for the year.

(14.3% alcohol) Deep ruby-red. Less obviously 2003 on the nose than La Fleur: dark berries, minerals, smoked meat. Then suave, minerally and rather backward, with strong acidity framing the berry, chocolate and licorice flavors. Finishes firm and tannic, with considerable oakiness and a slight dryness.

Blackish crimson with nice freshness on the nose. Lots of ripe berries on the front of the palate but then attractively refreshing. Very fine tannins on this super cuvee from Hubert de Bouard of Angelus's Lalande de Pomerol property. It's very sweet and fruity and almost Pinot-like. (JR)
