(sourced from mencia vines that are reportedly almost a century old; fermented with 40% whole clusters): Saturated ruby. A highly complex bouquet displays scents of red fruit preserves, incense, lavender and smoky minerals. Sweet, penetrating and pure on the palate, offering vibrant raspberry and cherry-cola flavors along with an exotic floral pastille note. Finishes very long and spicy, with lingering mineral and red fruit qualities.

There is a similar agreement with the 2010 Capelinos, which is again split between the two aforementioned winemakers. This collaboration between winemakers Raul Perez and Buitron Luis Barros is pure Mencia fermented in open-top vats and raised in 225-liter French barriques for 12 months. It has a caressing, feminine bouquet of red currant, raspberry preserve and orange blossom that is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp citric entry. It is very focused and very fresh with a seam of balsamic from start to finish. The fruit is edgy and vibrant on the finish with dried orange peel and Moroccan spice on the aftertaste. Excellent. Drink now-2018. In 2001, Pedro Manuel Rodriguez Perez took the helm of Bodegas Guimaro from his father and grandfather, who have all been instrumental in the rejuvenation of abandoned terraces in Ribeira Sacra. His friend, Raul Perez (no relation), uses the facilities to make his El Pecado, a wine that has been rated highly by my predecessor. The family owns eight hectares of vineyard in the sub-region of Amandi and controls another 12 hectares owned by other growers. These are succinct expressions of elegant, refined cool-climate Mencia that effortlessly combine Mediterranean ripeness with Loire-like pepperiness. As far as I am aware, these wines are not presently imported into the United States. If that is the case, they should be. No known US importer but imported by Indigo Wines in the UK; www.indigowine.com
