Score 90/100 · Drink 2013-2023, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jun 2013

The 1993 Opus One is a wine of pure impact. The fruit is front and center in this bold, juicy Cabernet Sauvignon. Slight elements of brett detract from the wine's balance, but the 1993 has enough depth to drink well for at least another decade, if not considerably longer. The blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 4% Merlot.

Still quite youthful crimson though a slightly weak rim. The oak seems a little dominant on the nose. Sweet, exotic, tealeaf flavours. Nice balance but a little muted somehow. Tannins still very much in evidence. 41 day skin contact is a pretty serious extraction program! (JR)

Smaller berries and crop size than usual. Estate fruit had to be supplemented by To-Kalon produce. Cabernet Sauvignon 89%, Cabernet Franc 7%, Merlot 4%. Skin contact 42 days, 18 months in new French oak. Very deep colour. Still vibrant crimson. More voluptuous and easier than the 1991. Very engaging nose. Inky and dusty. Fine, ripe tannins. I can imagine other California winemakers envying this! Very, very refreshing and appetising. Neat dry finish. Lacy. Not dense. (JR)
