Score 93/100 · Drink 2015-2024, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2015

A dark, plummy expression of Nebbiolo comes through in the 2004 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio. Hints of tar, white truffle, smoke, lavender and pine add shades of nuance to the bold, purple/blackish fruit. The French oak is a bit pronounced; otherwise this is a fine effort. Since it was first made in 2002, Scavino's Bricco Ambrogio has shown itself to be the most forward and fruit-driven of the single-vineyard Barolos.

The 2004 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is the most forward of these 2004 Barolos. Made in a fruit-driven style, this plump, juicy wine is packed with sweet dark fruit. White pepper, truffles, plums and prunes develop with air, but this wine is ultimately more about immediacy rather than complexity. Still, it offers much pleasure.

(from a vineyard in Roddi; spent one year in barriques and one year in large ovals) Good deep red. Aromas of redcurrant, plum, graphite, flowers and nutty oak spices. Sweet, smooth and pliant, in a very ripe, soft, chocolatey style. As sweet as this is, it's quite shapely as well, finishing with perfumed truffle and earth.
