Score 92/100 · Drink 2016-2025, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jul 2016

The 2005 Barolo is a bit slender, but also nicely balanced. Dark red cherry, plum and smoke overtones give the 2005 much of its considerable appeal. The French oak is evident, but also nicely integrated, especially next to the 2004.

Good medium red with amber highlights. Sexy perfume of redcurrant, tobacco, marzipan, chestnut, minerals and loam. Fresh and tight in the mouth; considerably less sweet and accessible than the 2005 Barbaresco. Finishes vibrant, firmly tannic and a bit youthfully tough.

The estate's 2005 Barolo is pretty and sensual in its dark fruit, menthol, spices and licorice. This mid-weight Barolo reveals gorgeous balance and long finish and a relatively accessible personality for this bottling. That said, the wine needs a few years in bottle for the tannins to soften.

Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020. Proprietor Pio Boffa clearly has a huge passion for wine. Then again, he owns some of the finest vineyards in the region. My recent tasting with Boffa included a number of older Barolos, all of which had developed very nicely. Importer: Maison Marques & Domaines, Oakland, CA; tel. (510) 587-2000
