Score 94/100 · Drink 2025-2050, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate, Apr 2024

From a quite late-ripening vintage yet already bottled in September of the following year and with 9.5 grams per liter of residual sugar, the 2010 Riesling Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann is pure and saline on the complex, mineral and earthy/flinty nose that reveals ripe stone fruit aromas along with forest floor notes. Round and quite sweet on the palate yet also mineral, this is a finessed Rangen with a vital and utterly mineral finish and dense, rich, still-prominent fruit that is more of a fruit essence than materialized fruit. The wine has very good length, but the best is yet to come here. As some of the younger vines were declassified in the Thann Riesling, yields were at a low 25 hectoliters per hectare; but all grapes were harvested very healthy, and the juice fermented pretty fast to 12.5% alcohol.

Volcanic. RS 9.5 g/l. Bright golden. Very rich-smelling, as though there is some botrytis. Smells like vanilla. Then it tightens up on the palate so it’s a dry, tight, racy winner with real depth. Very distinctive! Hugely complex and long. (JR)

Stony and slaty, honeyed and fragrant with a floral nose and a really gripping length. There is something brilliantly expressive yet whispered about this, with its poise and balance. (RH)
