The medium amber colored 2001 Riesling Clos Saint-Urbain Rangen de Thann opens with a concentrated, intensely aromatic yet refined and elegant bouquet of ripe peaches and apricots, oranges, leather and tobacco notes intermingled with white pepper and precise, flinty and aromatic stone fruit aromas. Round and rich yet elegant and even balanced on the palate, this is a pretty sweet yet also pure, saline, finely tannic, very intense and sustainable Rangen Riesling that is concentrated but vital and elegant, providing a long, intensely aromatic and fine, tannic finish. Bottled in September 2002 with 12.6% alcohol and 12 grams per liter of unfermented sugar. Natural cork. Tasted in Wachenheim, Pfalz, in November 2023 and again in March 2024.

Highly complex nose combines pit fruits, pepper, menthol, smoke and flint, with hints of dried fruits. Offers compelling density and concentration of fruit; quite thick but with good verve. A bit youthfully sweet today in this line-up, but this is still a bit disjointed and in need of more time in bottle. Not at all a hugely ripe, botrytized style of Rangen.
