Transparent, distinctly sweet and a bit gassy. Meatiness on the nose. This wine from the heatwave was immediately most appealing although it did fade in the glass, suggesting the indubitable fruit is just a tad tired and very slightly simple – but it's lots of fun. To be enjoyed sooner rather than later. (JR)

The 2003 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux is respectable for the vintage, with black and red pastilles on the nose without the delineation of the 2001 or 2002, though there is an attractive lavender scent with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins, rendering this a “mellow” Clos des Epeneaux with a velvety smooth texture that is pleasant, if lacking some complexity. Drink now-2018. This tasting was organized by UK importer Howard Ripley Ltd. Ticket was paid in full by The Wine Advocate.

Cask sample. Very firm, concentrated nose. Lots of density and no shortage of acidity and tannin. This is slightly more like the old Comte Armand style, but with an additional smoothness. Dry finish. Not as magisterial as the Hubert de Montille Les Rugiens. It may take on weight. Already quite full, convincing and round. Powerful cherry flavours with structure and some appetizing vegetal character. (JR)
