Tasting notes
Hailstorm mid August.‘The hailstones were not particularly hard, but the vines, shocked by the event, slowed down. Overall, it wasn’t a particularly warm year.’ Mid to deep ruby with orange tinges. More fragrant than 2007 and a moving scale between dark fruit and raspberry with also the first hints of tobacco. Needs lots of air to release its fine, concentrated perfume. There is concentration with elegant palate weight and gripping long tannins that are a little finer than 2007. But it is a toss-up, with 2007, exotic as it is, perhaps the more interesting wine in the long term and showing more concentration. I would serve this now . (WS)

Cupano's 2008 Brunello di Montalcino stands out for its textural richness, depth and persistence. A beautifully layered wine, the 2008 emerges from the glass with sweet dark cherries, tobacco, licorice, menthol and tar, all of which come alive in a sensual style that is very appealing. As always, Cupano's is one of the richest wines of the zone, but all the elements are very much in balance. The bouquet isn't as focused as it could be, but that is a relatively small critique for a wine that delivers so much personality and character.

Concentrated ruby with orange tint. A bit oxidative with cherry, oak and apple notes. Sweet and intense on the palate but is ageing quite rapidly. Could be a cask sample? (WS)
