This is surprisingly lively, with cooling acidity and crisp mineral tones elevating its core of tart red berry fruit. It leaves a pleasantly chewy sensation and a tinge of balsamic spice, tapering off long, fully resolved yet remarkably fresh. Don’t sleep on the 2006 Caprili, because even as its nose reveals more maturity than the palate, the balance here is very special.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is a fairly bold wine packed with dark cherries, leather, licorice, underbrush and tar. It is an inward, brooding Brunello that is going to need a few years in bottle for all of the elements to come together. Judging by what I was able to observe in the glass, the wine will open up nicely over time. Today, it remains a promising Brunello with a bright future.

Mature-looking medium ruby. Muted nose, and somewhat inexpressive on the palate. High acidity makes the tannin look tough, but there is aromatic length. Wait. (WS)
