Score 87/100 · Drink 2014-2019, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Feb 2014

The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino follows a distinct pattern that Il Poggione has shown with its older vintages: The Riservas fare far better over time compared to the base Brunello. This wine is a case in point. Leather, cured meat and dried fruit are what’s left on the bouquet. The mouthfeel shows more energy thanks to its fleshy, velvety feel. If you have this in your cellar, don’t wait much longer. Drink: 2014-2019.

Deep ruby with small orange rim. Sweet undergrowth, malt and hints of kirsch and tar. Quite a powerful nose, but only slowly opening up in the glass. It has an underlying richness that hasn’t come out yet. Fine concentration and sweetness, underlined by muscular grainy tannins. Succulence and concentration. Elegance and power. Still has a long way to go. (WS)

Deep red-ruby. Roasted berries, chocolate and cedar on the nose; a bit porty yet lively. Dense, sweet and rich, with fruit of steel. Rather powerful, even a bit youthfully aggressive, in a port-like way, with concentrated flavors of dark berries, licorice and spices. Finishes with chewy tannins and excellent length. Needs a good five years of patience.

Healthy crimson. Leafy mulch nose. Full, dramatic palate impact. Lots of intensity. Certainly no sacrifice to modernity. Very traditional. (JR)
