The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino, dark in color, floral, smoky, and redolent of truffles along with its plum fruit, is round, ripe, and elegant on the palate, smooth and shapely in format, a Beau Brumal with biceps. Drink: 2005-2018. Importer: Empson USA, Alexandria, VA; tel. (703) 684-0900

Bright medium ruby. Superripe, sweet, soil-driven aromas of blackberry, cassis, smoke, truffle, earth, cinnamon and nutmeg, plus a whiff of magnolia blossom. At once sweet and gripping, with fruit of steel. The taut berry and iron flavors reminded me of a very ripe Graves. A very complex, very young wine with great personality and outstanding length.
Very lively and appetising, though the acidity is quite pronounced. Crunchy fruit but no compromises in terms of structure. This wine was aged for three years in large Slavonian oak botte. (JR)
