Score 93/100 · Drink 2016-2026, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jun 2016

The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino shows the very best of the vintage. Classy, polished and super-expressive, the 2005 retains striking freshness throughout. Wild cherry, earthiness, licorice, smoke, rose petal and anise lead into the vibrant finish. Like most wines of the year, the 2005 is a bit lithe, but that is not at all a critique, rather simply an observation. What a pleasant surprise the 2005 has turned out to be.

The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino is an impeccable, racy wine endowed with gorgeous, delineated fruit expressive aromatics, all of which come together with considerable grace. Fragrant dark cherries, violets and menthol add further shades of complexity. The 2005 is a relatively soft, smaller-scaled version of this wine but it is nevertheless quite beautiful.

Maturing ruby tending towards brownish tinges. Warm, peppery, quite complex, but firmly in the dried fruit spectrum. As heady as the nose is, the more austere the palate. High acidity dominates the dried fruit finish. (WS)
