Our first wine is Soldera’s 1987 Brunello di Montalcino. The anticipation is palpable. Bright, vibrant red, the 1987 is wonderfully fresh and floral. The purity of the Sangiovese fruit is just exceptional. Don’t ask me about the 1987 vintage in Montalcino because I don’t remember much. I doubt anyone does. I won’t forget this wine, though. What an absolutely pristine bottle. The 1987 is the first sign we are in for an extraordinary two days of tasting,

The 1987 Brunello di Montalcino is another huge surprise. Although the vintage may have been largely forgotten, Soldera’s 1987 can’t be. Virile and almost shockingly imposing, the 1987 is a bit burly around the edges next to the very best wines in this tasting, but it has held up beautifully. What a gorgeous wine it is.
Soft, silky and expressive, the 1987 Brunello di Montalcino is also quite open today. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherries, raspberries and tobacco meld together in a soft, gracious Brunello that is giving all it has today. This is a distinctly feminine Brunello built on understated persistence and pure class.
About the producer
Soldera is one of the most highly rated, fiercely collected wines of Italy. The winery is based in the Brunello di Montalcino, however the estate is no longer labelled as a Brunello, following a fall out with the consortium. Made from 100% Sangiovese, the wine is currently bottled as a Toscana IGT.
