The 1984 Brunello di Montalcino emerges from a vintage whose memory has long faded. Even so, Soldera’s wine is very pretty. Hints of orange peel, spice, kirsch and dried flowers lend an exotic touch as this mid-weight, fully mature Brunello opens. There’s no upside to cellaring bottles, although I doubt many are out there.

Soldera's 1984 Brunello di Montalcino is almost shockingly good. Incredibly vivid from the first taste, the 1984 only improves with air, as it becomes fresher and even more nuanced. Sweet tobacco, dark cherry, licorice, smoke, leather and herbs are all suggestive of a Brunello that is fully mature, and yet the 1984 seems to find an extra register of nuance and vibrancy as it continues to open up in the glass. For pure pleasure, the 1984 is one of the most enjoyable (and surprising!) wines in this tasting. I can't recall such a fine showing from the 1984.

The 1984 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the smaller-scaled wines of the night, but it shows terrific balance and harmony in a fully mature style. Unfortunately, we don't have great luck with our 1985s.
