Score 94/100 · Drink 2018-2028, Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, May 2011

The 2008 Grands-Echezeaux hovers on the palate with endless layers of fruit. Initially somewhat weightless, the Grands-Echezeaux blossoms beautifully in the glass, showing plenty of inner reserve and stuffing. This is a classic Grands-Echezeaux with the potential to continue to improve in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028. Importer: Atherton Imports, Menlo Park, CA; tel. (650) 328-6639

This also displays reasonably well-integrated wood treat which allows for a reasonably clear expression of the ripe and spicy black cherry and currant aromas that introduce the more precise but equally rich broad-shouldered flavors that finish with both verve and a subtle touch of minerality. I like the sense of harmony here and while this is not as complex as one might like at present, it should develop more in time.

Medium red, a bit paler than the Clos Vougeot. Then complex but laid-back on the nose, hinting at raspberry, smoke, spices and minerals. Round and sappy in the mouth, offering an enticing sweetness and a firm edge to the raspberry, spice and mineral flavors complicated by earth and mushroom notes. The firm finish features good lift and length.
