Score 88/100 · Allen Meadows, Burghound, Mar 2013

The expressive nose is now a mix of primary and secondary aromas with delicious and attractively complex medium weight though beautifully focused flavors that are underpinned by round and relatively soft tannins, all wrapped in a nicely spicy if ever so slightly warm finish that displays noticeable bitterness. Curiously, there is marked oak char in some bottles yet others are really quite pure. If you happen upon one that doesn't have the bitter oak char on the finish, this is classy and quite long if not especially dense. As with the '93 Clos de Bèze, I've experienced a lot of bottle variation with this wine.

A superb wine, the dark-colored Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses reveals an attractive nose composed of black cherries and violets and a fabulously chewy, thick and velvety mouth densely packed with flowers, berries and a touch of earth. Full-bodied, this outstanding offering can be drunk in 5 years, or cellared until 2010. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. I was impressed with Robert Groffier's 1995s. They displayed good ripeness, concentration and structure. It is the first vintage where his wines will not be subjected to either a fining or filtration. I have purchased, drunk and cellared some of his previous vintages (and sold them when I worked in retail) and have seen the heights this domaine is capable of achieving. Deep, bright red. Pungently perfumed aromas of black raspberry, redcurrant, coffee and spice. Silky, suave and delineated, with tangy red fruit flavors. A delicately perfumed but intensely flavored midweight, with beautifully integrated acidity. Finishes subtle and very long, with a hint of cherry cola.
