Score 87/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2004

Rather odd aromas of pepper, herbs, asparagus and horseradish. Then full, layered and sweet in the mouth, but with an intrusive vegetal quality hiding the site character. Tannins are nicely ripe. Roumier had to use commercial yeast skins to finish a stuck fermentation. He admits that the yeasts brought "a foreign flavor" to the wine, and he fined and coarsely filtered it prior to bottling. Still, he believes this Amoureuses will be better for time in bottle. We shall see.

Full deep red-ruby. Deep, musky, briary aromas of raspberry and chocolate, plus a slightly intrusive green note. Fat, rich and thick but seems a bit harsh and tannic for this wine, as if from energetic extraction. Slightly minty. Roumier felt this wine may have spent a bit too long on its skins due to a stuck fermentation. In an awkward stage today and in need of polishing.
