Only the second vintage under the Bartons, and still showing beautifully. Captures the gourmet spirit of 2012, with red cherry and soft raspberry fruit, unfussy, easy to drink, one of the surprises of the week for me, and amazing value. Fully in its drinking window. Melanie Barton winemaker.

The 2012 Mauvesin Barton has quite a powerful nose, a little rustic perhaps, but lovely decayed red fruit, burning embers and light tea leaf aromas percolate through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with rather stringy tannins, fine acidity, though not as complex as more recent vintages. A little straightlaced towards the finish, I would broach this now and over the next four to six years. Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting.

Light and fragrant raspberry and reducurrant fruits, this is ready to drink, full of tobacco leaf and fine tannins. This was the first full vintage under the Barton family after their purchase in 2011, overseen by the same consultant Eric Boissenot and cellarmaster François Brehant as at their St Julien properties.
