Score 91/100 · Drink 2018-2025, Neal Martin, Nov 2018

As it is my birth year, I enjoyed two or three encounters with the 1971 Lafleur before. To be honest, it is not as good as one might expect given that Pomerol excelled in this vintage. It has a leathery nose with dried flowers and sometimes an unwanted geranium note. The palate is fresh and balanced, uncomplicated and winsome, underpinned by expressive Cabernet Franc towards the finish.

This fully mature wine has an opulent, savory, cedary, spicy, slightly jammy, herbal bouquet. Soft, supple, broad flavors display a lot of ripe fruit and little tannin. Anticipated maturity: Now-probably in serious decline. Last tasted, 2/84.
