Score 89/100 · Drink 2018-2025, Neal Martin, Apr 2018

The 2001 La Lagune has more freshness and vitality on the nose compared to the 2000 vintage. It offers unfurling wild strawberry and orange pith notes neatly interwoven into tobacco and graphite aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft opening. It is quite plush in the mouth, surprisingly so for a 2001 Left Bank, with candied redcurrants and strawberry pastille that frame a rounded, if slightly simple, easy-going finish. Drink this now and over the next decade. Tasted at the La Lagune vertical at the château.

Pale rim and rather grey crimson. Very light sweet and simple on the nose. Green and underripe. Hard work – desperately needs food. (JR)

Relatively pale. Lightweight, but serious nose with interesting terroir nuance. Very positive impact on the palate. One of the best Haut Médoc 2001s by quite a margin. A wine that already has a beginning, middle and end to it. (JR)
