The 1999 La Lagune was born in the year that the Frey family bought the property although they only signed on the dotted line at the end of the year so had no say in the viticulture. Indeed, this had already been put into 100% new oak by the time they picked up the keys. The nose is not bad with raspberry preserve and briary notes, almost pastille-like in style and the oak does seem to have been assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied and here the oak comes through strongly and seems to dominate the fruit and any terroir expression, especially on the finish. Tasted at the La Lagune vertical at the château.

This wine is a medium/dark ruby-colored offering with a nose of toasty oak, dried herbs, sweet cherries, and spice. This elegant, medium-bodied wine finishes quickly. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.

Very pretty blackberry, tobacco and cedar aromas. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a medium, fruity aftertaste. Best after 2004. 16,665 cases made.James Suckling, Wine Spectator
