Score 86/100 · Drink 2018-2023, Neal Martin, Apr 2018

The 1970 La Lagune has long been one of the better vintages from yesteryear. This bottle exhibited a slightly fatigued, tarry nose with straightforward dusty black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, stocky and lacking much sense of grace but with vestiges of sweetness on the finish. Well-stored bottles will give pleasure to those partial to a bit of "old school" claret. Tasted from a bottle from my private cellar.

The 1970 La Lagune is still surprisingly firm, but, I believe, fully mature. It has a dark ruby color, a big, plummy, woodsy, and mushroom-like bouquet, full-bodied, deep, concentrated, berryish fruit flavors, good tannins, and a long finish. This is a fine La Lagune that falls just short of being outstanding. Anticipated maturity: Now-2000. Last tasted, 1/91 (from a magnum).
