Gaiole in Chianti. 100% Sangiovese. Quite mature-looking dark ruby with brickstone rim. Prune and fruitcake opening. Same on the palate. Rather sweet and in danger of getting tired soon. (WS)

The 2007 Chianti Classico Grosso Sanese is big and brawny in its dark fruit, tobacco, earthiness, tar, leather and licorice, with more overt oakiness than is typically the case. The 2007 shows terrific volume and depth, but like all of the estate's wines it needs to be given some air.

Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022 This is an uncharacteristically mixed set of wines from Il Palazzino. The 2007 La Casina Girasole and 2007 Chianti Classico Argenina both revealed technical imperfections that precluded their being included in this report. The estate's higher-end wines fared better.
