Good depth of colour, soft ruby but still with brilliant reflections. Campfire smoke and grilled almonds on the nose, earthy and very much ready to drink. This has autumnal berry fruits, with an emphasis on cigar box and grilled oak rather than fruits at this point. Definitely one to drink now.

The 2005 Tronquoy Lalande is a jewel of a wine. Beautifully perfumed and silky in its first impression, the 2005 is understated at first, before the Saint-Estèphe tannins kick in. Gravel, cured meats, licorice and dried herbs all complement the dark fruit. The 2005 has enough depth to drink well for another handful of years. Impressive.

An attractive wine from the owners of Montrose and, at this time, the brilliant Jean-Bernard Delmas, who made all the great Haut-Brions between 1959 and 2003. This wine displays sweet black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, some earth and spice, medium body, and moderate but sweet tannin. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.
