Score 89/100 · Drink 2019-2040, Neal Martin, Aug 2019

The 2002 Lafaurie-Peyraguey is almost like a toned-down version of the 2001. It has a very similar bouquet of dried quince and white flowers, here armed with honeysuckle and white peach aromas. Not as complex as the 2001, though it is well defined. The palate is medium-bodied and more unctuous than expected, featuring more honey and peach, marmalade, almond and coconut. My main criticism is that it fades away on the finish and thus warrants earlier drinking than other vintages. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at home.

The 2002 Lafaurie-Peyraguey has a refined bouquet with touches of beeswax, honeysuckle and dried quince that demands coaxing from the glass. The palate is well balanced with unctuous marmalade and honey on the entry, touches of bitter lemon coming through with fine tension on the finish. This is a 2002 that does want to be outdone by the previous vintage. Whilst it does not reach the level of the 2001, it remains a commendable Sauternes.

Pale-medium yellow. Rich aromas of apricot, mirabelle, licorice and grilled nuts. Sweet, supple and harmonious, with lovely stone fruitflavors complemented by vanillin oak. Offers an enticing combination of density and vivacity; full but not at all heavy. Finishes with noteworthy persistence.

Light lemon colour. Very, very sweet and slightly simple. Lots of short-term pleasure. Quite astringent finish. (JR)
