Score 93/100 · Drink 2019-2040, Neal Martin, Aug 2019

The 1997 Lafaurie-Peyraguey has been a consistent performer over the years. Dried honey, lanolin, beeswax and hints of quince are all delivered with energy and precision. The palate is medium-bodied, offering a viscous texture and ample honeyed fruit laced with orange pith and Seville orange marmalade. What struck me with this bottle is the acidity and race toward the finish. A Sauternes with more bite than I remember, hence my higher score. This comes highly recommended. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at home.

The 1997 Lafaurie-Peyraguey is quite deep in colour for a 1997. It has quite a rich, honeyed bouquet with touches of lanolin, beeswax and undergrowth, open and vibrant. The palate is medium-bodied, viscous on the entry, fat in the mouth with impressive tension and animation towards the finish, hints of bitter orange and marmalade on the aftertaste.

Strange nose at the moment but round, full, rich nose of ripe pears. Lovely pure fruit but not one of the biggest. Slightly simple. (JR)
