Score 88/100 · Drink 2013-2014, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, May 2011

The 1994 Saffredi boasts a deep color and similarly intense, rich flavors for a wine of its age. Mocha, roasted coffee beans, licorice and worn-in leather come forth in the glass before the wine starts to lose its focus and energy in the glass. Some rough edges will always remain. The 1994 is another vintage that should be enjoyed within the next few years.

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 8% Alicante The climatic tendencies of 1994 were regular: a sunny spring with a bit of rain, a hot and well ventilated summer that brought the grapes to perfect maturity. The first rains came after the end of the harvest. The harvest was carried out between 10 September and 6 October. 12,000 bottles produced Round and if anything more evolved on the nose than the 1993 although the tannins are certainly still quite tough on the palate. Jewel bright fruit. A little hollow on the mid palate – the 1993 seems more complete. (JR)
