Score 91/100 · Drink 2018-2029, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2018

Fresh medium red with modest saturation. Good lift and balsamic complexity to the aromas of strawberry, cherry, caramel, truffle, earth and dried rose. Silky and evolving, showing nicely integrated acidity and sweetness to its red fruit and floral flavors. There's an element of thickness here that belies the vintage's high yields but nothing at all sloppy or excessive. Finishes with surprising length. This wine relies more on its serious dusty, palate-coating tannins than on its acidity for structural support.

The dark ruby-colored 1999 Volnay La Carrelle Sous La Chapelle has a feminine, violet, rose, and blackberry-scented nose. On the palate, however, it explodes with blackberries, freshly laid road tar, and licorice. This backward, highly expressive wine will require cellaring due to its copious yet ripe tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2009. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. (205) 980-8802.

Bright ruby-red. Lively aromas of bitter cherry and minerals lifted by a floral aspect; faint medicinal character. Juicy and high-pitched, with tightly wrapped flavors of cherry, licorice and stones. Not as expansive or sturdy as the Pommard Jarollieres, or as complex today, but finer and rather delicate.
